Now it's time for you to put your math skills to the test and budget for your own school - one of the most important steps in building a new school! Watch the video then follow the steps below. Let's get to work! You just heard from Bea in our UWS Cambodia office and now you're ready to calculate your own school's budget. Your budget: $20,000 ** Number of Pupils: 120 ** Number of Classrooms: 4 STEP 1: Using the School Shopping List below, select which items are necessary for your school. Calculate how much these will cost! Be sure to keep track with a pen and paper. TOP TIP: You may want to do some research into the weather in the country where you are building your school, to make sure you are picking the right materials and energy sources for the climate. STEP 2: Calculate how much you have leftover (remember, you started with $20,000! What else can you buy? Is there anything that is left out? STEP 3: SHARE! Too heavy to transport by boat Wooden classroom for 30 children 4 $6,000 Wood is good for a hot climate Stone classroom for 30 children 4 $10,000 Stone is good for a cold climate ROOF MATERIALS Tile Roof 1 $1,000 Tile needs to be changed every 10 years. Good for a cold climate Tin Roof 1 $500 Tin is good for a hot climate. Needs to be changed every 7 years Straw Roof 1 $100 Straw is good for a dry climate, but needs to be changed every year WATER AND ENERGY Water Pipes 3 $30 Solar panels 1 $500 Wind Farm 4 turbines $7,000 4 turbines will provide electricity to 8 classrooms for 10 years Power Station 1 ` $15,000 1 power station will provide electricity for the entire village for 20 years. Materials can only be transported on a lorry.
