Hurpa is a small village in the Himalayan foothills of Eastern Nepal. The village is a three hour drive from the nearest town, and the community have to walk for several hours to reach the nearest government school or hospital. The 2015 earthquake left the village even more isolated, destroying roads and buildings in the surrounding area. The majority of Hurpa community are rice farmers, and until this year, children would spend their days helping parents in the fields or at home. Some attended a small community-run school where parents attempted to teach without pens or paper. Few adults in the community can read or write, but many hoped for a better life for their children. The opening of UWS Hurpa School is cause for celebration: a celebration of our 100th UWS School,a celebration of the** 13th UWS School **to open in Nepal, and perhaps most importantly, a celebration of Hurpa community’s first functioning primary school! 85 children are now attending lessons ranging from Nepali and English, to Maths and Science. With plans to extend the school and build a road out of the village, this number is set to triple by 2019. We can’t wait to see UWS Hurpa School come to life over the coming weeks!
