Role Summary     

This new role will play a crucial role in establishing and managing our events portfolio. You will lead the end-to-end planning and delivery of a range of high-profile engagement, stewardship, fundraising events that inspire and enthuse guests to support us.

The role will work closely with the our major donors, committees and external volunteers as well as with stakeholders across the charity. You will lead them to develop and implement a special events strategy that achieves income targets and creates meaningful engagement and stewardship opportunities in support of wider fundraising targets. This includes taking responsibility for the planning and delivery of our biannual charity Gala, supporter visits to our projects in Cambodia, Myanmar and Nepal, as well as a portfolio of exciting and engaging new events. 

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone with proven experience of securing significant income from high value/special events, meeting the required return on investment. You will have hands on end-to-end event management skills and the gravitas to lead the portfolio. You’ll need to be able to hit the ground running to pick up on what’s been done and what needs doing in terms of events in 2020-2021. You’ll have fantastic communication skills and the ability to liaise comfortably and confidently with donors, committees, guests, venues & suppliers as well as other high-value supporters.  

There are over 258 million out of school children globally and we need to grow our income in order to meet this need. So we’re launching an ambitious events programme to achieve a step change in our income over the next 3-5 years.

This new role will work across the funding & partnerships team (major gifts, corporates, partner schools and trusts & foundations), reporting into the Director of Development, working closely with Trustees, committee members and colleagues in programmes. We are specifically looking for individuals with demonstrable experience and ambition to grow our events programme.   • Work with colleagues across fundraising to deliver High Value Events that will enable us to achieve our vision and mission.
  • Develop, establish and execute our event portfolio, developing a calendar of inspiring and engaging cost-effective opportunities that engage supporters across all income streams.
  • To ensure events already in the calendar between now and the end of 2020 are delivered to a high standard.
  • To manage the established UWS biannual Gala (committee led) ensuring timely progress and successful delivery of the event in terms of maximising income generation and providing an inspirational and memorable experience for supporters.
  • To pilot and deliver a number of challenge events (UK and internationally) that engage corporate and other supporters.
  • Active marketing of events in order to recruit participants and maximise income through entry fees and sponsorship.
  • Plan new mass-participation events, celebratory gala dinners and establish our challenge programme including an overseas trek/marathon.
  • Maximise fundraising potential from event participants e.g. through use of online giving platforms such as Just Giving.
  • To create a culture of excellence in the operational delivery of events through detailed planning, best practice and maintenance of secure and excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • To plan, monitor and manage all own events budgets, ensuring that the agreed budget (income and expenditure) for each event is achieved.
  • To manage the recruitment, performance and succession planning of volunteer supporter committees, ensuring that roles and responsibilities are clear with Terms of Reference/Engagement and specific targets.
  • To set up and lead a Prize Acquisition Committee to focus on securing auction lots and prizes to be shared across all events.
  • To develop external stakeholder relationships (senior volunteers, suppliers, event attendees and supporters) to maximise their input and support for the charity, enabling access to their networks.
  • Work with members of the Funding & partnerships team to identify and develop sponsorship opportunities for Special Events.
  • To be responsible for the production of high quality event promotional materials for own portfolio of events, ensuring that all materials reflect the needs of the events itself whilst meeting the UWS brand/charity guidelines.
    With the team and Senior Associate for Marketing, plan and coordinate imaginative promotional activities for each event to include promotional events, media and PR, so that we reach the participant target per event.
    Develop proposals and stewardship plans for donors, to ensure efficient internal processes and to encourage donor retention.

Person specification


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent. 
  • Demonstrable experience of High Value Event fundraising with an excellent track record of developing and delivering six figure events.
  • Strong product development experience.
  • Experience of recruiting committee members and managing these relationships to introduce new donors at the highest levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, evidenced by close, successful relationships with donors, board members, VIPs, stakeholders and senior volunteers and ambassadors.
  • Substantial experience of devising and implementing successful fundraising events to deliver income growth and stewardship events to engage supporters.
  • A professional and enterprising solutions-focused approach to making effective decisions, applying critical thinking to weigh up risks and challenges to drive, develop and implement new ideas, systems.
  • Determined, persuasive, ambitious, flexible and a proactive team player which means you commit and deliver for the cause.
  • Willing to travel across the country visiting schools and other education providers. 
  • Willing to (occasionally) jump on a plane to Cambodia, Myanmar or Nepal to visit our schools and host school trips.


  • Experience of working with press.
  • Experience of managing and developing staff. 
  • Experience of corporate fundraising.
  • Experience working for an international development NGO.
