Our Kindergarten programme (UWK) is giving the smallest members of the communities we work with the chance to 'learn to learn'. Early education plays a crucial role in children's development and sets them up for success.

Combatting the global shortfall

New research shows that 250 million children aged five years or under are at risk of ‘failing to reach their full potential’.

Recent studies have highlighted the global short-fall of early years education provision. Since 2002, the amount of aid provided to pre-school education has drastically fallen. New research shows that 250 million children aged five years or under are at risk of ‘failing to reach their full potential’.

Kindergartens are vital for child development; they prepare children for primary school and have huge impact on their later success in life. These programmes are often overlooked since their impact is less immediate and visible, but we know early education is crucial to children’s long term development.

The benefits of early years education

Children who attend some form of pre-school education are more likely to enrol in primary school and remain in education throughout their teens. Studies by the Global Education Monitoring Report have shown clear results to suggest children who attended kindergarten performed better in speaking, reading, writing and mathematics by the second grade of primary school than those who didn’t.

In Cambodia, developing kindergartens for younger students has led to a rise in community engagement. Our kindergartens provide a safe and stimulating space for pre-primary age children, while older children can focus on their studies instead of having to look after younger siblings.

Growing our Kindergarten programme

The United World Kindergarten Programme is unique to Cambodia, where primary school typically begins at age 5 or 6. We're now reaching almost 500 young students across over 15 different kindergartens, preparing and supporting them to become ‘school-ready’. Our kindergarten teachers are equipped with all the tools necessary to provide a solid foundation for education.

We're also helping older students continue their education
