Our second school, UWS Tiem Kram School has served families of the Lun tribe living in the Vernsai district of Ratanakiri, Cambodia, since 2009. From the outset, the school in Tiem Kram village was partnered with the Royal Grammar School, Guildford (RGS).
Thanks to the support of staff and pupils at RGS, UWS Tiem Kram School has been able to grow. With kind support from another donor, every pupil now has a school uniform, which the children wear proudly.
Despite some setbacks due to flooding and the need for renovation work, UWS Tiem Kram School now sits at the heart of the community. Mr Chan, the village chief, and an enthusiastic husband and wife teaching team, Mr Mai and Sonika, keep the school running well. The School Support Committee here is active and the library is usually busy!
As we go into 2014/15, there are still improvements to be made. Alongside learning resources for the year ahead, we need to continue to provide ongoing professional development for teachers. We will also be equipping all students with their own UWS school bag, containing an exercise book, basic stationery and crayons for drawing. Further plans for the school include running a pilot scheme of basic literacy and numeracy assessments to monitor pupil progress.
We’re looking forward to working with RGS to carry out these developments. Here’s to another year!
