UWS Takok Charai School opened in the Oyadao region of Ratanakiri in 2010, with thanks to the support of Evan Quiros.
Since then, the school has benefitted from the skills of two trained, well-motivated teachers, who live in on-site accommodation. This husband and wife team, Phea and Theary, keep the school and surrounding land beautifully maintained, with vegetables growing on site. Attendance is good and the school regularly teaches over 100 pupils per day.
However, as we go into the next academic year, there are still improvements to be made at UWS Takok Charai School. Alongside replenishing general classroom equipment, the well is in need of repair and the library resources need updating. We will be equipping all students with their own UWS school bag, containing an exercise book, basic stationery and crayons for drawing. Plans are also in place to employ Theary as librarian in the new school year.
We’re looking forward to working with Grey College at the University of Durham to further develop this community in 2014/15.
