UWS Rock School opened in 2010 with the support of Richard Koch. Located in the Vernsai region of Ratanakiri, this school was the first built in the new UWS design. Chris Outram, UWS Chairman, recently enjoyed visiting the school, even venturing on a swim down the river!
UWS Rock School is currently operating well, with over 200 children often attending. Due to this demand, two shifts are run (AM and PM), with children learning in one of the school’s three classrooms.
Som and Thong, the two teachers at UWS Rock School, are excellent. They truly understand the value of play and self-learning and support pupils to do this. As a result, the library is at the heart of the school. Plans are in place to employ a local woman as school librarian soon.
Planned developments for UWS Rock School also include building a fourth classroom and delivering better sporting activities. Additionally, we’re aiming to provide more learning resources and to pilot basic literacy and numeracy assessments to monitor improvements. We will be equipping all students with their own UWS school bag, containing an exercise book, basic stationery and crayons for drawing.
There remains a lot to be done as we move forward. In 2014/15, we’re looking forward to working with the German Swiss International School to support the community of Rock village. Here’s to another year!
