Early May marked one year since the devastating Nepal earthquakes, the second of which had its epicentre very close to the planned UWS hub of Sankhuwasabha, in Eastern Nepal. One year on, and we are thrilled to announce that Sankhuwasabha is no longer a ‘planned’ UWS hub, but home to our very first school in Nepal!
The inauguration of UWS Mude took place on 29th April, well attended by the entire village, the UWS Nepal team and the 34th Prime Minister of Nepal, Hon. Madav Kumar. The former Prime Minister closed the inauguration ceremony, cutting the ribbon to cheers from the entire community.
Educational opportunity in Sankhuwasabha was very limited even before the earthquake. This time last year, as many as 15,000 children in the region were out of school completely, or studying in temporary learning centres. Lessons have now begun in Mude, and with several more school development projects underway in the region, hundreds more children will soon be able to attend a UWS school.
