For the past four years, UWS Chai Thom School has served families of the Charai tribe in the Andoung Meas region of Ratanakiri, Cambodia, providing a basic education to people who would otherwise have none. Since opening in 2010, the school has developed greatly, with thanks to the staff, pupils and parents of the Portsmouth Grammar School.
UWS Chai Thom School sits at the centre of its village community, bringing people of all ages together to learn. With four classrooms and two qualified teachers, the school is well equipped. On some days, it serves as many as 150 pupils, but attendance is variable. In 2014/15, we’re aiming towards more consistent attendance figures.
This is now one of our ‘complete’ schools, with 4 classrooms, solar power, a teacher house, well, toilet and library. As we go into 2014/15, more work is needed to maintain and develop the school further. Plans include improving library facilities and training a woman from the community as a librarian.
We’re looking forward to working with PGS to continue making a positive impact on this community. Here’s to another year!
