Since opening in 2012, UWS Blai School has served families in the Borkaeo region of Ratanakiri. As of last year, the school has been partnered with Westcliff High School for Girls. The fundraising efforts of pupils, parents and staff at WHSG have been an excellent source of support for the Blai community.
Currently, UWS Blai School has three local teachers (one trained and two community teachers). The school has very good attendance and runs two shifts, with up to 180 children and young adults attending lessons.
A third classroom has now been completed and the new solar unit allows evening lessons to take place. The library is running well, with a woman from the community soon to be appointed as Librarian. Music education has also been a success at Blai, with volunteer Milly Loveday running a teaching programme during the past summer.
However, there are still developments to be made in the coming year. Plans for the school include improving the library, building a toilet and well, and supporting the teachers to improve their skills through professional learning. We will be equipping all students with their own UWS school bag, containing an exercise book, basic stationery and crayons for drawing.
As we head into 2014/15, we’re looking forward to continue working with WHSG to support the community of Blai village.
