Fellowship programme

UWS FELLOWS ARE HIGHLY SKILLED CHANGE-MOBILISERS. THEY TURBOCHARGE EDUCATION STANDARDS TO DELIVER LEARNING EXPERIENCES THAT INSPIRE HOPE, ENHANCE LIFE EXPECTANCY, AND SUPPORT GDP-BOOSTING ECONOMIC RETURNS.

Each UWS fellow helps as many as 150 children stay in school longer and achieve a life-changing education. The more fellows we deploy, the more schools we empower to deliver poverty-beating learning experiences.

Driving education-led change

When we talk about education, we’re thinking beyond learning to read, write and count. It’s also about igniting a child’s aspirations, enhancing future employability, and transforming life quality. Unfortunately, limited training opportunities and teaching resources means the breadth and standard of education doesn’t always allow children to hit these goals. Finding the right people to inspire as well as educate in our schools is a big part of our mission to increase school attendance and tackle the education crisis.

The UWS Fellowship program channels the energy of young leaders of tomorrow into mobilising social change by nurturing teaching talent and enhancing the quality of learning experiences.

A platform for future education leaders

The Fellowship programme provides a platform to kickstart the careers of young graduates, inspiring a new wave of future education leaders. Our multi-talented UWS Fellows bring enthusiasm and innovation to their teaching. They also often offer stronger abilities than local teachers in core subjects, such as maths and English, which leads to significant improvements in attainment. In 2020-21, in our schools with fellows, 63.2% of students achieved grades 1-5 in English (57.4% in UWS schools without fellows and a national average of 55%.) In maths, in UWS fellowship schools, 61.2% achieved grades 1-5 (54.6% in non-fellow schools and a national average of 51%.)

Becoming a Fellow is the result of a rigorous selection process and extensive training. We support every young leader to develop a skill set to improve the educational standards of our schools in Nepal.

Building connections beyond the classroom

The Fellow role extends beyond the classroom. A key part of the Fellowship approach is to facilitate meaningful connections between students, teachers, parents and community leaders. This is achieved in a number of ways. From establishing our Radio Programme during Covid-19 which reached +24,000 daily listeners, to championing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) clubs in our schools, to playing a leading role in running girls’ clubs. Our ambition is to grow the UWS Fellowship Program, extending this vital support to more schools across UWS regions.
