UWS Jong Ra opened two years ago. Today, under the leadership of a committed headteacher, the village’s first ever school is thriving.
Entering the school, the first thing you notice are a number of signs with proverbs, praising the value of hard work, education and progress. The school is very tidy, has its own garden, a shaded reading area, and even a school shop for the children. Classrooms are decorated with students’ artwork, and the headteacher has turned a section of the library into a school office. In this office is a pile of letters, sent to parents whose children do not attend school. As parents are unable to read the letters themselves, these are delivered to families by the community teacher, who reads them aloud: No wonder school attendance is so good!
